Lesson 5 Mini-assignment

Q As one way of gaining participation points, you may submit a question or prompt for discussion in our live meeting, and then attend that meeting. You may submit such a question or prompt here! The Professor and TA can see who submitted questions/prompts here, so that we can double check that any participation points claimed for submitting discussion questions are claimed accurately, but we will not share who submitted which question/prompt with the rest of the class (unless we receive permission to do so). To qualify for participation points this way, your question/prompt must be substantial, i.e. it must raise a specific question or interesting point about the material that shows that you have thought about it. For example, your question cannot be something like "did you all like Heraclitus' views on change?", as that does not show deep engagement with the content. Rather, your question could be something like "Did you all think that Heraclitus' observations concerning how things tend to change was enough to really get him his grand conclusions concerning the centrality of change? I ask because I think so and so...."

The idea of the continuum by Heraclitus is quite fascinating and is often referred to as “Panta Rhei,” which is commonly translated as “everything flows” and is one of his most famous aphorisms. In Plato’s Cratylus, Socrates says “Heracleitus is supposed to say that all things are in motion……..into the same water twice” (Jowett, n.d.). From Heraclitus’ idea of the continuum, we can interpret that everything surrounding us is undergoing a constant change, just like the freshwater keeps flowing and renewing the stream.
